The Sinclairs of Co Sligo
James Sinclair had a house, offices, stores and yard in Knox’s Street in the Town of Sligo, held from Captain James Martin. The property included a kiln, butter store and counting house: ‘Good front – and open rere and yard to river also back passage to street.’ The total valuation was £50. A plan was included in the 1855 Valuation House Books, showing the layout of the buildings. He was still holding the same property at Griffith’s Valuation in 1864.
James arrived from Scotland in the 1850s. He was a merchant and when he died in 1897 he left nearly £3,000 in Ireland and £20,000 in Scotland to his sons James Sinclair of The Mall, Sligo (and Crosshill, Glasgow), Hugh Reid Sinclair and John Sinclair, all provision merchants. In 1918, Hugh Reid Sinclair was trading as James Sinclair & Co. at Knox’s Street, Sligo.
