The Sinclairs of Co Galway
Robert Sinclair was a £10 Freeholder in 1841, which meant he could vote. He was listed as a farmer owning houses and lands in the townland of Glenloughane in the parish of Cloontuskart and barony of Cloonmacnoon. This townland was southwest of Ballinasloe. This was recorded in the Tuam Herald on 3 April 1841. At the Ballinasloe Quarter Sessions held on 2 November 1848, Robert was again registered as a £10 freeholder.
At Griffith’s Valuation of 1855, in the townland of Glenloughaun Robert was holding a house, offices and 51a 0r 7p from the Earl of Clancarty (Plot 1 in the reference map). The land was annually rated at £14 10s. and the buildings at £1 15s., totalling £16 5s. It has to be assumed that Robert and his family were living in the only buildings in the townland.
Townland of Urraghry, parish of Clontuskert
In the adjacent townland of Urraghry, Jane Sinclair was the leaseholder of two plots of land which included the buildings known as Sinclair’s Village. Both were quite small and it seems she was the leaseholder from the same Earl for who were doubtless two relations. One was Joseph Sinclair, house, offices and land of 15a 1r 0p (Plot 10). The land was rated at £6 10s. and the buildings at £1 10s., total £8. The other was for Charles Sinclair, house, offices and lands of 16a 3r 39p(Plot 11). Land rated at £7, buildings £1 5s., totalling £8 5s. Mrs Jane Sinclair of Urraghry was fined 1/- and 1/- costs on 1 September 1860 for two horses wandering on a public road, and again on 5 January 1861.
Townland of Cleaghmore, parish of Kilcloony
In 1855 Joseph Sinclair owned freehold a house, offices and garden in Cleaghmore townland in the parish of Kilcloony, which he let to Richard Sharpe. The land amounted to 3r 16p, rated at £1 5s. and the buildings at £7, totalling £8 5s. Clearly the buildings were worth more than the land Jane was holding in his name in 1855, maybe because the plot was between the Town of Ballinasloe and the railway station, and just beyond the area flooded by the River Suck. He was resident there in 1847.
In 1855 in the Town of Ballinasloe in the parish of Kilcloony, and not far from Joseph Sinclair’s property, Anne Sinclair leased a small house, yard and garden from the same Earl in Brackernagh Street. Land of 15p rated at 5s. and buildings rated at £1 10s., total £1 15s.
